The World Camp

I attended the World Camp at Foxlease, Hampshire, UK which took place from 24th to 31st July 1999.

3200 Guides and Girl Scouts from 55 countries attended. This was only the third World Camp ever. The first was held in 1924 at Foxlease, and the second at Windsor in 1957.

A selection of the photos that I took can be found on the following pages:

Opening Ceremony - the camp was officially opened on the morning of Sunday 25th July.

Closing Ceremony - the camp closing ceremony was held on the evening of Friday 30th July.

Sub camp gateways - there were twelve subcamps. They were "named after universally famous meeting places throughout the world". Hard Rock Café was the staff subcamp, and Silver Website was the adult subcamp where I stayed. The other subcamps had a mixture of UK contingents and international visitors.

'People' - pictures of Guides of all ages from near and far.

General - pictures of the site.

Activities - some of the activities that took place.

There were many activities to choose from at World Camp. I spent quite a bit of time in the craft tent. Click here for some of the crafts and instructions.

At the end of the World Camp in 1924, Olave Baden Powell gave this message:

'….it is not the end, only a beginning; a beginning of many friendships, a beginning of closer co-operation between the girls of all nations, a beginning to an era of Peace and goodwill.'
